Sunday Snap – Osborne House

We had a trip up to Edinburgh for last week's Sunday Snap of the Detective Creator. I asked which writer invented Sherlock Holmes and the answer is

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Cracking the case with the right answer were Anne and Cheryl.

For this week we are travelling 450 miles over land and sea to the Isle of Wight. Pictured above is the favourite royal residence of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The original building on this site was demolished and this Italianate house was built between 1845 and 1851. With its sweeping views across the Solent Prince Albert said it reminded him of the Bay of Naples. Albert's passion for new technological innovations is shown in the interior with a fireproof construction and hot water systems for baths and showers.

Victoria and Albert liked the idea of island living as a way to escape the prying eyes in London – and think this was the days before paparazzi photographers and social media. With their ever growing family it provided them with a way of having a private family life. In the grounds a Swiss Cottage was constructed where the children were educated and learnt practical skills.

After Albert's death in 1861 at the age of just 42 Victoria retreated to Osborne House and was rarely seen in public for many years. She wore black clothing for the rest of her life. Victoria died at the age of 81 at Osborne House and with her death brought the end of an era. This week's question is

In what year did Queen Victoria die?

We were joined last week by Susan and zip line fun in the park. Lisa has been walking the trail at Nahal HaShofet. The crochet hook has been busy at Anne's. There has been an odd cloud spotted by Cheryl.

  1. I am so sorry my comment didn't show up last week. I had been in the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle centre a few weeks ago too. Sorry. I'm sure it was 1901 that Queen Victoria died x
