Sunday Snap – Barnard Castle

We were looking at an old grocer's shop in Grantham for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked which famous politician was born there and the answer is

Margaret Thatcher

Putting a cross on the ballot paper with the right answer were Susan, Kara, Susanna, Phoebe, Emma and Erica.

This week we are paying a visit to the County Durham town of Barnard Castle. It takes its name from the castle in the photograph which in turn is named after Bernard de Balliol. The original land was given to Guy de Balliol but the 12th century foundations of the castle was established by his descendant Berrnard de Balliol and his son Bernard II.

Over the years writers and artists such as Charles Dickens, Walter Scott, William Wordsworth, Daniel Defoe and J. M.W Turner have flocked to Barnard Castle to be inspired by its ruins and its picturesque position on a ledge above the River Tees.

The castle has had a number of owners but the last royal one inherited it through his wife Anne Neville, who was the daughter of the Earl of Warwick. We have already featured this king on Sunday Snap after his grave was found in a Leicester car park after being killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field. It was noted that Barnard Castle was one of his favourite residences and his boar emblem can still be seen carved into the stonework. This week's question is

Which English king once owned Barnard Castle?

We were joined last week by Susan who has been finishing off the school holidays with some kite flying. Kara has had a splashing good time and a spot of pond dipping. Kelly was giving out good karma.
