Sunday Snap – The Northumbrian Lighthouse

We were celebrating the longest day in the UK with a trip to Stonehenge for the summer solstice in last week's Sunday Snap. With it being situated between Salisbury and Amesbury it is of course in the county of

Wiltshire

Those who got it right were Cheryl, Rachel, Bex, Cass, Michelle and Nichola. I hope you all made the most of your light filled day!

This week we are going back to the coast and another lighthouse but this one is off the Northumbrian coast. Not only is it a fine looking lighthouse but it has a history with it and a tale of bravery that lives on to this day. In the early hours of 7th September 1838 the daughter of the Longstone Lighthouse keeper looked out of her window and saw the wreck of the paddle steamer The Forfarshire on the rocks of a nearby island. The Forfarshire was making the journey up the north eastern coast from Hull to Dundee. After it had sailed past Berwick the engines had failed completely. With strong winds blowing the captain made the decision to head back down the coast to what he thought would be the safe harbour of North Sunderland, now known as Seahouses. Just outside Seahouses lie the rocky Farne Islands and it is here The Forfarshire came a cropper. With the winds still blowing a gale the lighthouse keeper's daughter persuaded her father that they should go and help the survivors who could be seen clinging to the rocks. The pair of them got into a Northumbrian rowing boat known as coble and set off. These cobles were designed to be handled by a minimum of three strong men. Between them they managed to save the lives of nine people who undoubtedly would have perished if this rescue mission had not been undertaken.

The lighthouse keeper's daughter was just 22 at the time of this daring rescue but four years later she died from tuberculosis. In this short four years she became a legend in her own lifetime with awards and medals bestowed upon her. Such was the fascination with her that the Duke of Northumberland was appointed her guardian in order to protect her the sudden media attention and wealth that came her way. So this week's question is

What was the name of the Victorian heroine who lived in the Longstone Lighthouse?

We were joined last week by Cheryl and a gravity defying hairstyle. Anne has been on a visit to the oldest pub in Birmingham. Meanwhile Merlinda has been monkeying around with a rather large primate.
