In last week's Sunday Snap we had an University Castle which shared an UNESCO World
Heritage Site with the cathedral across the Palace Green. That
cathedral often tops lists of Britain's best or most loved buildings
and of course can be found in
Durham
Onto this week and rather
scandalously we have a statue of a naked lady riding a horse. This
statue dates from 1949 in a city that was devastated by German
bombing during the Second World War. Although the modern day city
resembles a post-war new town at its heart is a ancient settlement of
significant importance. The woman on the horse is universally known
as Lady Godiva. During the 11th century she pleaded with
the Earl of Mercia to stop the oppressive taxation that was being
forced upon his tenants. Despite her continued appeals the Earl would
not relent until he said she should ride naked on a horse through the
town. She did this with only her long hair granting her some modesty.
Legend states that she requested that the people of the town to stay
indoors with all their windows closed. However one tailor, by the
name of Tom, cut a small hole in one of his shutters to witness her
ride. This 'Peeping Tom' as he was later known as was said to be
struck blind by his actions. The Earl of Mercia kept to his word and
cut the taxes. The Earl of Mercia by the way was the husband of Lady
Godiva. This week's question is
Where did Lady Godiva ride
through?
We were joined last week by
Betty
and her beautiful shot of a low full moon in New Zealand.

I'll
share my favourites with you next week and remember I do like a bit
of a tale to go with a photo but it's not a necessity!
I've linked up the lovely lorikeets at Chessington that the kids had sitting on their arms drinking nectar out of a little pot (£2 for a tiny pot - eeek ! - but it was a unique experience !)
ReplyDeleteVery interesting to read - thanks for sharing x x
ReplyDeleteI think the answer to your question is Banbury or Banbury Cross x
ReplyDeleteI didn't realise this was statue was in Durham, but having spent time in a city's rebuilt cathedral to have an idea of where Lady Godiva was - another inspirational legend!
ReplyDeleteA lady who understood the power of a publicity stunt well before the rest of the world caught on!
