Sunday Snap – The Yorkshire to Lincolnshire Bridge

We were hearing tales of mischief in the cathedral for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked which cathedral the Imp could be found in and the answer is

Lincoln

Behaving herself with the right answer was Anne.

This week we are crossing county borders from Lincolnshire to Yorkshire via a road bridge. When it was opened in 1981 this single span suspension bridge was the longest in world at 2,220m. Since then it has been overtaken in length by seven other bridges. A suspension bridge design was chosen as pillars along the length would have caused an obstruction to the river traffic. The cost of constructing a tunnel would have been excessive. Before the bridge was opened travellers could use a ferry crossing the river or travel via the inland roads which could add around 50 miles to a journey from Goole to Hull. Since it opened over 190 million vehicles, cycles and pedestrians have crossed over the bridge.

As a toll bridge the high charges for crossing over it have been criticised over the years. In 2006 the price for a standard car crossing over was £3 for a single journey. The high charges were down to the enormous debt (over £150 million) it still carried. At the time it was the most expensive toll bridge in the UK. The financing of the debt was restructured which meant that for the last five years the price for a single trip for a car is £1.50. This week's question is

What is the name of the bridge?

We were joined last week by Susan with egg painting and toddler jumping. Anne received some lovely Mother's Day cards. In Norway Cheryl found a sloping house. We've been catching up with Cécile and Baba's March adventures. Finally, Gentle Joy has been stalking the hawk with excellent results.

  1. I honestly don't know the answer this week. I suppose I could Google but I'll let someone else get it right ;) It's an impressive bridge though, and I suppose if it was one of the first I can understand the debt it cost to build it, what a shame to pass the debt on to those that used it though. I wouldn't pay £3 to cross a bridge.
