Sunday Snap – The Sail Tower

For last week's Sunday Snap we were looking at a statue of a reformer of the postal service. I asked who the statue was of and the answer was

Sir Rowland Hill

Posting the right answer were Stephen, Cheryl and Jen.

We're off to the coast for this week's Sunday Snap. The tower above is named the Spinnaker Tower as it has been designed to resemble a spinnaker type sail. At a height of 170m the observation deck allows views of up to 23 miles. Although it now dominates the skyline it has been racked with controversy. It was originally planned to open in 1999 to coincide with the Millennium celebrations – in fact its first name was the Millennium Tower – however it eventually opened in 2005. By that time the cost of the project had soared to over £35 million. It has also been beset with technical problems including a malfunctioning lift and having to adapt it so it would comply with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. Despite these hiccups the attraction continues to be popular with tourists wishing to travel up it and take in the views from the observation decks. Last year sponsorship was finally secured in a deal with the Emirates airline.

Where is this tower located?

We were joined last week by Betty and a stunning sunset as seen from her New Zealand garden. Also capturing the beautiful colours in the sky was Sophie over in France. Getting excited for Disney on Ice was Susan's daughter dressed as Anna from Frozen. Cheryl was lining up the shadows on the beach. Kara was also down at the beach and finding her boys in the wooden house.

  4. I think this may be in Portsmouth? I remember the furore when it didn't open in time - I pitied the person who had to defend the scheme to the media lol
