Sunday Snap – The AA Box

It was back to school for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked which public school it was and the answer is

Eton College

Top of class last week were Cheryl, Angela, Nadine and Cass.

We're on the road for this week's Sunday Snap. At one point these AA boxes were common sight on the highways of Britain. They were not intended for the use of the public instead they were designed as shelters for passing AA patrols. The first box was installed in 1912 at Newingreen near Hythe in Kent. It was appropriately numbered 'Box 001' and each box received its own individual number.

In 1920 AA members were given a key which they could use to open the boxes. In each one they would find a telephone, fire extinguisher, local information, small fuel supply, first aid kit and cleaning materials.

In total around 800 boxes were installed up and down the country but now only 19 remain. Eight of these boxes are Grade II listed and are maintained either by the AA or a statutory authority. The boxes started to be replaced in 1968 with more modern and simpler phone pedestals. In 2002 the AA decommissioned all of its roadside phones due to the rise in mobile phone ownership. Of course back then your trusty Nokia could last for a week on a single charge! This week's question is

What is the full name of the 'AA'?

We were joined last week by Cheryl and a choice of cakes. Shaheen took a trip to see Brighton in both the day and night. We had some toddler fashion and hair styles from Susan. It was all stacking up for Kelly with a patched-up chimney. Finally, Sue has playing with flowers in Photoshop.
