Sunday Snap – The other Elizabethan Elizabeth

We were over in Liverpool for last week's Sunday Snap of The Cavern Club. I asked which Fab Four group were famous for playing there and the answer was

The Beatles

Making music with the right answer last week were Cheryl, Susan, Angela, Nichola, Kara, Jen, Cass and Kizzy.

For this week we're off to Derbyshire and a rather splendid looking house. The 'ES' initials are for the mistress of the house Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury. Elizabeth or Bess, as she is better known as, was on her fourth and final marriage to George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury. With each of her marriages she was able to gain more and more wealth. During her lifetime she became the second richest woman in the country with only Queen Elizabeth I having more money and power. The house was built in the late 1590s and is well-known for the amount of glass windows that it contains. At the time glass was more expensive than stone so this was a deliberate show of wealth on Bess' part. In the shadow of this house is the old building that Bess was born it. Rather than fully demolishing it the structure was left to go to ruin but large sections still remain today. Until the 1950s the house remained in the ownership of Bess' descendants the Cavendish family of the Dukes of Devonshire. The unexpected death of the 10th Duke of Devonshire in 1950 meant that death duties of 80% was levied and the house was given over to HM Treasury in 1956 in lieu of Estate Tax. The house and surrounding estate was then gifted to the National Trust 1959 and is now open to the public.

What is the name of the house?

We were joined last week by Sophie and a flat car battery on the way to catch the ferry. Down Under Snoskred has been enjoying a walk along the beach. Also enjoying a walk along the coast was Cheryl but this was the very windy British version! It must have been the week for beach as Sarah made her way to Alum Chine. Over in New Zealand Betty has been exploring the caves on Waipipi beach. Back in Blighty the beach also beckoned to Kara. Jack and Noah have been making the most of the winter sunshine. There was some fun on the swings when Susan went to the park. Finally, alone in the dark was Kelly's empty chair.

  1. Ah, I love it here! We've been twice now to Hardwick Hall and the last time in mist and fog which made it truly atmospheric. Bess was one remarkable lady. xx

  7. I know this one I think - isn't it Hardwick Hall.

I only know as there's a Hardwick Hall not too far from me and I googled the wrong property when we were thinking about going to visit. I remember reading about it thinking how I would have known about somewhere so lovely near to us but it turned out I was reading the wrong place. Ours is nowhere near as lovely as this x
