Last week we were looking at
the origins of Nipper Alley for Sunday
Snap. I asked what music label and shop featured Nipper the dog
and the answer was
His Master's Voice or HMV
Getting tuneful with the
right answer last week were Cass,
Nadine, Kizzy,
Clare, Ali,
Rachel and Ruthy.
59 years ago this week a
jazz club opened at 10 Mathew Street in Liverpool. It was named The
Cavern Club after the Parisian jazz club Le Caveau De La Huchette
but it also suited its underground setting which was a former air
raid shelter. After it opened it soon become a venue for the newly
formed local skiffle bands. Any type of rock 'n roll music was
definitely not permitted but after a set performed by The
Quarrymen in 1957 more blues and beat bands started to appear.
The club's heyday was in the early 1960s when one particular group
consisting of four local men started to performed there after
returning from a stint in Hamburg. After over 200 sets at The Cavern
Club the band came so famous that the club's small capacity could no
longer contain their legions of screaming fans. The club soon became
a hub of emerging Liverpool bands and solo singers but also acts that
were to become some of the best known in the world such as The
Rolling Stones, Queen and Elton John.
All of this came to an end in
1973 when the club was bought by British Rail and was closed. Its
underground location was filled in as part of the Merseyrail
construction project whilst the ground level buildings were
demolished to make way for ventilation shaft. The Cavern Club moved
across the road but never had the same vibe as the original and it
changed its name several times over the years. Without The Cavern
Club though there was something lacking in Liverpool and in 1984 work
began on building a new Cavern Club on the original site. The planned
ventilation shaft was never built and the area had been used as a car
park. Many of the original bricks were able to be recovered and
reused. The new Cavern Club still remains true to its roots as a
venue for new talent and live music plus a tourist destination.
Which Liverpudlian Fab
Four are associated with The Cavern Club?
We were joined last week by
Sophie
and her watchful crow. All kilted up for a wedding was Susan's
troop. We had a trip round the garden with Snoskred.
Two became one for Kelly
with some hand holding. Kara
managed a full house of her family in front of the castle. A nosey
cat was captured by Sue.
Out and about was Ali
with some seasonal red berries. Finally over in New Zealand Betty
was in the right place at the right time for the cloud formations by
the mountain.

of a tale to go with a photo but it's not a necessity!
I have a confession to make.. I am a Homes Under The Hammer addict. I like to play it while I walk on the treadmill. Somewhat hilariously, todays episode had some footage of The Cavern Club! Is this some kind of message to me? ;)
