For our first trip up to
Scotland on JibberJabberUK we had a visit to Melrose Abbey for last
week's Sunday
Snap. I asked which famous Scottish king's heart was buried in
the grounds of Melrose Abbey and the answer was
Robert I better known as
Robert the Bruce
We had right answers last
week from Susan, Cheryl,
and Sam. If you don't
believe me about the heart here's the evidence. Well evidence there's
a plaque in the ground at least...
Onto this week and I've gone
topical again. By this stage of the weekend you have either probably
sat on the sofa watching rugby match after rugby match or cursing the
whole Rugby World Cup and wondering when the whole blinking event
will end (final isn't until 31st October, yes really
end of October). This statue is outside Rugby School in Warwickshire
and depicts one of its former pupils. A widowed mother moved to the
town of Rugby in the 1800s with her two sons so the pair of them
could take advantage of the scholarships which allowed local children
to attend the town's eponymous public school. It is alleged that in
1823 the younger of the two brothers while playing football picked up
the ball (which was allowed at the time) and then ran with it (not
allowed) thus creating the game of rugby football. Or did he...? The
rules of this game of rugby weren't written down by the pupils until
1845 and the sole attributer of this story didn't mention this boy's
name until 1880. It seems the boys of Rugby School didn't have much
respect for the rules of association football and just made them up
whenever they played a game and running with the ball was a common
occurrence. Although it seems more likely that numerous people were
responsible for creating the game of rugby as we know it today the
legend lives on. When the Rugby World Cup is raised by the winning
team on 31st October it will be the trophy that bears the
name of this boy. This week's question is
Which former Rugby School
pupil is this statue of?
We were joined last week by
Susan's
little wish blower. There was a trip to the zoo for Sophie.
Snoskred
was flying high at the aircraft museum. Cheryl
had a pile up of children. The regimental flags were photographed by
Sam
in Chester Cathedral. Kelly
shared with us her serene looking Buddha head. Over in New Zealand
Betty
captured the cows and sheep enjoying the spring sunshine. Finally,
Kara's
two boys were enjoying a giggle together.
