Sunday Snap – Meet me under the clock

We were looking at a tennis trophy for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked you what was the name of this impressive three-tiered trophy and it is

The Davis Cup

Serving up the right answer were Susan, Cheryl, Anne, Nadine, Jen, Stephen, Cass and Michelle.

We're on our travels this week with a visit to a London train station. Those with an interest in horology have always found rich pickings in railway stations. When the railways in Britain were built in the early 19th century the time of day was calculated by using sundials. The problem with this system is that throughout the country the sun rises and sets at different times. Therefore using this system noon in London according to the sundial came six minutes earlier than noon in Leeds. Not only did this cause confusion with timetables needing adjusting throughout the land but it was also becoming dangerous with people, horses, carriages and indeed other trains not knowing when it was safe to either cross or use the tracks. For this reason 'Railway Time' was introduced as standard by the Great Western Railway in 1840. Within a couple of years this system was taken up by all the other railway companies in Britain with the clocks being set to the local time in London otherwise known as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

This station is the largest in Britain so a large 4-sided clock in the middle of the concourse is easily justified. Made by Gents of Leicester this clock for nearly a hundred years has become known as meeting place for Londoners – quite often of a romantic nature. Look out for gentlemen wearing a red flower in their lapel! Aficionados of Only Fools and Horses will remember this as the location that Del Boy arranges to first meet his future wife Raquel in the 1988 Christmas special.

The day after Abba's first appearance on Top of the Pops they held a press photo shoot at this station to celebrate winning the Eurovision Song Contest. This week's question is

What is the name of the station?

We were joined last week by Susan and her children looking extremely beautiful and handsome for a family wedding. Cheryl has been digging deep into her family history. Also going back in time was Anne with a family photo from the 1970s. Kelly was not playing with fire but smoke. Making use of the woods this week was Kara whether hanging from a tree or on Segways.
