The Month Ahead – March 2019

Welcome to March's The Month Ahead. Spring has truly sprung this month. We have double the patriotic celebrations in March with St. David's and St. Patrick's Day. Get your pancakes flipping on Shrove Tuesday and don't forget Mothering Sunday at the end of the month. Let's have a look at some of the traditional feasts and festivals, events and exhibitions that are happening around the UK this month.

1st March – St. David's Day. Celebrate the patron saint of Wales in the city of St. Davids itself. Shop windows will be decorated and judged on best display. A pilgrim's walk through the city and events round the cathedral.

2nd March - Greenwich Market Pancake Race. Get flipping and go racing at Greenwich Market. Enter as an individual or as a team.

2nd and 3rd March - Yorkshire Brass Band Championships. Huddersfield Town Hall will be filled with two days of fabulous brass band music all competing to be the best in the region. Some of the finest and most famous brass bands are from Yorkshire so a great opportunity to hear them play.

5th and 6th March - Royal Shrovetide Football, Ashbourne. This Derbyshire welcomes the medieval game of 'football' again for its annual Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday game. Played over two days and eight hour sessions the goals are also three miles apart!

8th to 17th March - POW! Thanet. To coincide with International Women's Day a week-long festival of arts and culture celebrating and exploring issues around feminism, women and girls.

16th March - World's Original Marmalade Awards and Festival, Penrith. The magnificent Dalemain Mansion is the host again to the best in marmalade making and serving. Join in with the tasting, listen to preserve making experts and buy some treats at the food market.

17th March - St. Patrick's Day carnival parade and concert, Belfast. Pipe bands, dancers and colourful floats will make their way across the city. A free concert finishes off the day.

22nd to 24th March - Hawick Reivers Festival. Experience the feuds and tension of living in the Borders of Scotland in the 16th century. Watch historical enactments, procession, food and entertainment.

23rd March - Best of British Railways, Crewe. Railway fans will delight in this event showcasing the best in modern railways. Held in the Crewe Heritage Centre which will also have its displays on show as well.

29th to 31st March - National Trust Mother's Day events. Book an afternoon tea, take a walk or join in with some crafting. Events around the country.
All events are subject to change. Please check with the organisers before travelling.
