Sunday Snap – The Detective's Café

We were off shopping for last week's Sunday Snap of the London Emporium. I asked which store it was and the answer is

Liberty's

Going on a spending spree with the right answer were Susan, Faith, Kara, Mary, Anne and Lisa.

This week we are off to North Gower Street in London. Never heard of it? For filming purposes it doubles as the location of the most famous streets in detective fiction. The real one couldn't be used as the street is too busy with traffic and visiting tourists.

In the unaired pilot episode the café was branded as Mrs Hudson's Snax n Sarnies but it was decided that it would keep its true name for the filming. For The Abominable Bride episode set in Victorian times the name is shown as Speedwell's Coffee and Sandwich Bar.

The door on the left-hand side is actually the door to Mrs Hudson's property. In the television series the door knocker is always left crooked unless the detective's brother, Mycroft, has paid a visit and straightened it. It also has the number 221B on it in the television series.

The blue plaque on the wall actually has nothing to do with the television series or books. It is dedicated to Giuseppe Mazzini, an Italian statesman who campaigned for the unification of Italy in the 19th century. This week's question is

Which television programme was Speedy's featured in?

We were joined last week by Susan who has been celebrating Hogmanay. Kim has found a new hobby. The White Rabbit was found by Sarah. Photographing the thin blue line was Sam. Kara has been out and out by the river and on the climbing frame. The new year came in with a bang for Sophie. Mary found a tranquil moment at the beach. Cute kitten Ash alert at Anne's! Lisa has been looking back on her travels in 2018. Finally, Jesh has been making plans for the year.
