Sunday Snap – The Roman Emperor

We looking at a Roman column for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked which city it was in and the answer is

York

Marching with the right answer were Kara, Cheryl, Anne and Soma.

We're still in York and continuing the Roman theme for this week's Sunday Snap. Just across from the Roman column is this statue of Emperor Constantine. He was proclaimed Emperor near this site in 306. The column is thought to be part of the Great Hall where Constantine was declared Emperor. The fact that York Minister now stands on this site holds great significance. In the first couple of centuries of Roman rule Christians were persecuted. Emperor Nero seemed to take particular delight in the killing of Christians. The simple fact was the Romans had their own gods who they worshipped and the refusal to sacrifice to them was seen as an insult.

Christianity in Roman times was popular only among the lower orders in society such as soldiers and slaves. It took the conversion of the Emperor Constantine to change this. It is claimed that Constantine had a dream or vision that Jesus instructed him to fight under Christian standards a battle that he went on to win. His commitment to Christianity was shown in the building of churches across Europe plus his involvement in the Council of Nicaea in 325. Since Roman times there has been a bishop in York. In 735 the seat of York was elevated to that of Archbishop. It is now the second highest bishopric in the Church of England after the Archbishop of Canterbury. This week's question is

Who is the current Archbishop of York?

We were joined last week by Susan and igloo building. Some rare snowfall in Dorset meant snow fun for Kara and some sledging. The light provided for some perfect posing for Cheryl. Anne has been dreaming of living in a mansion. We had fabulous Aztec dancers from Sara. Finally, Natasha has been looking back on February.

  3. I think its Justin Welby. I remember when we used to call catholics Roman Catholics, I'm wondering if this is because of Emperor Constantine? I've just realized how little I know about religious history. Thanks for hosting x
