Sunday Snap – The Three Graces

Three Graces Liverpool waterfront Pier Head River Mersey

It was off to the hallowed lawns of SW19 for last week's Sunday Snap. Although the tennis tournament is generally known as The Championships or simply Wimbledon I asked what the name of the club that it is held at is called. So to give it its full name it is

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club or simply The All England Club

When it was originally founded in 1868 it was called The All England Croquet Club as croquet was the fashionable craze of the time. It changed its name to The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in 1877 when the first tennis championships were help. The 'Croquet' was dropped in 1882 but reinstated in 1899. I'm not sure how much croquet is played there now if indeed any at all. I read a newspaper article this week saying that 20% of the people polled had never even heard of croquet and that by 2037 the game may have died out altogether. It may well be not sure much of 'Anyone for tennis?' but more likely 'Anyone for croquet? Those in the mood for tennis last week with the correct answer were Cheryl, Louise, Rachel, Sara and Jen.

Onto this week and it's up to Liverpool. The Three Graces is the collective name to the three prominent buildings sitting side by side on the waterfront overlooking the River Mersey. The three buildings were built between 1908 and 1916 but it seems they weren't actually referred to as the Three Graces until 2000 when the name was mentioned in Britain by BritRail 2001 by LaVerne Ferguson-Kosinski. The local media liked the name and it stuck. In 2002 a competition was held to design a 'Fourth Grace' but the project was abandoned in 2004 due to the ever increasing costs. However in the same year it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status as part of the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City. This week's question is

Can you name any of the Three Graces buildings?

We were joined last week by Cheryl with some fun in the sun and some water pistol. Down by the river Sam has been enjoying a summer's evening.
