Sunday Snap – The Chair

We were in Stratford upon Avon last week with a statue of one of William Shakespeare's Fools or Jesters. I asked for the name of one of Shakespeare's many plays which features a fool or jester and some of the answers we had were

A Midsummer's Night Dream, King Lear and Much Ado About Nothing.

Making a song and dance with the right answer were Soma, Cheryl, Anne, Kara and Susan.

This week it is all about design and a style synonymous with Glasgow. This high-backed chair was designed for Miss Catherine Cranston for one of her tea rooms in Ingram Street, Glasgow. Today it is in the shop of the Glasgow School of Art. Its designer was also the architect of the main building of the Glasgow School of Art. This building was named after him. Sadly it was badly damaged by fire in May 2014.

The designer was born in Glasgow in 1868. After winning a student award he studied ancient classic architecture. The style he became known for was far removed from his student studies. It was a fusion of the Art Nouveau style that popular at the time with many other influences such as the Arts and Crafts Movement, central European Secessionism, Japanese aesthetics and the traditional Celtic craftsmanship. His other notable designs featured a stylised rose and also a sleek font which was used for the Willow Tea Rooms. This week question is

Who was the Scottish designer and architect?

We were joined last week by Soma and works in progress going to finished artwork. Susan was enjoying the sunshine. There's been fun with hair chalks at Cheryl's. Kara has been out with her family enjoying the bluebells and watching the jousting. Lisa made a card for an 80 year old fan. We have a selection of Sara's favourite flowers with varigated pink weigela, pansies in the lawn, red and pink rhodendrons and Lady's mantle. Finally, Jesh has been finding the seamless poetry in the everyday.
