Sunday Snap – The Paris Tower

We were at King's Cross Station for last week's Sunday Snap of the train designer. I asked which famous trains Sir Nigel Gresley designed and the answer is

The Flying Scotman and The Mallard

Steaming along with the right answer was Cheryl.

For this week we have left the country for the first time in 11 years! After popping into King's Cross Station we walked across the road to St. Pancras International to catch Eurostar to Paris. As soon as we could drop our bags off we headed off to Paris' best known attraction. It is the most visited paid monument in the world with nearly 7 million people visiting it annually.

It was built for the occasion of the 1889 Universal Exposition or World's Fair which was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. The design was the prize winning entry to a competition to 'erect an iron tower with a square base on the Champ-de-Mars, measuring 125 metres (410ft) across and 300 metres (984ft) tall.' To this day it remains the highest structure in Paris. It was meant to stand for only 20 years – part of the competition rules stated that it should be able to be dismantled easily. However by 1909 it had proved so popular with paying visitors and as a communications centre.

It is named after the engineer whose company designed and constructed the tower. It was actually designed by Maurice Koechlin, Émile Nouguier and Stephen Sauvestre. This week's question is

What is the name of the tower?

We were joined last week by Susan and a spot of bird watching. In Brittany Cheryl has been peeking through the rocks. Soma has been making a Lego Harry Potter quilt.
