Sunday Snap - The Cardiff Stadiums

We were looking at Ham House for last week’s Sunday Snap. Located in South West London between Kingston and Richmond it enjoys a prominent position on the banks of London’s most famous river which is the

River Thames

Those in the know last week with the right answer were Cheryl, Sam, Cass, Jen, Bex, Michelle, Kara, Helen and Clare.

We’re back in Wales this week for Sunday Snap. The photograph shows two major sports stadiums which unusually have been built next door to each other. This pair of stadiums is also located in the city centre of Cardiff. One minute you’re strolling past Cardiff Castle you turn corner and in front of you find this view. The stadiums are also both used for rugby union matches. When Cardiff Arms Park was first built there was a cricket pitch to the north and a rugby union stadium to the south. In 1969 it was decided to demolish the cricket ground so a second rugby union stadium could be built. This is the one you can see today. It is now home to the semi-professional Cardiff RFC and the professional Cardiff Blues rugby teams. The other stadium was known as the National Stadium and was built so the Wales national rugby union could play their games. Although it only opened in 1984 it was soon deemed that the capacity of 53,000 to be too small in comparison to other rugby union stadiums such as Twickenham with 75,000 and Scotland’s Murrayfield  with 67,000. So down it came and in its place the Millennium Stadium was designed to in order to house 74,500 fans. As a state of the art construction it was also built with a retractable roof. Now it is home to both the Wales national teams for both rugby union and football. One of the main reasons it was built was because it was awarded the privilege of hosting the Rugby Union World Cup Final. So this week’s question is

What year was the Rugby Union World final played at the Millennium Stadium?

If you’re not too hot on the rugby side of things here are some clues. The first Rugby World Final was held in 1987 and they are played every four years so as they say – you do the maths!

We were joined last week by Steph and a beautiful building in Barcelona. At the garden centre Snoskred has been trying to resist temptation. A room tidy up turned into a crazy dressing up session at Cheryl's. After dropping Jack off at school Noah was having fun in the fog. There was someone hiding in the teddies at Susan's. Sam has already started the preparations for Halloween. There was blue skies, blue seas and snow topped mountains in New Zealand captured through Betty's lens. For the Happy Handleys it was a day started with pancakes and finished with racing through the hay bales. And finally Kara was taking in the simple joy of her son running.
