Sunday Snap – Stonehenge

A demolished athletics stadium was the subject of last week's Sunday Snap. It was famous for hosting top-class sporting and musical events before it was bulldozed 23 years after it opened. The Sheffield based stadium was of course

Don Valley Stadium

Well done to everyone who got the answer last week – Kate, Suzanne, Anne and Rachel. For those wondering when the photograph was taken it was when Miss JibberJabber ran a 3km race there in April 2013. Seven months later in November 2013 this world class sports stadium was reduced to a pile of rubble.

Onto this week and a very different pile of stones. I expect by the time most of you have read this the morning's sunrise will have already happened. This year's midsummer's sunrise was scheduled for 4.52 am and each year Stonehenge has become a focal point to celebrate the new dawn of the longest day of the year. Whilst there has been myriad of theories to why Stonehenge was built its popularity with Druids has grown since the beginning of the 20th century. The design of the stones seems to act as an calculator for certain celestial events such as solstices, equinoxes and eclipses. On midsummer's day the stones are aligned to coincide with the rising of the sun and the summer solstice. This week's question is

Which county is Stonehenge situated in?

We were joined last week by Cheryl and a fruity face collage. For Merlinda's son the water was far too tempting to leave alone. Over in New Zealand Betty has been capturing the beauty of driftwood in black and white.
