Sunday Snap – Solar Eclipse

It was back to an age of elegance for last week's Sunday Snap. The fully functioning Victorian street lamp disguised the fact it had a secondary purpose of dispersing dangerous gases from the sewers below. I asked what gas this was and the answer was

Methane

Top of chemistry class this week are Rachel and Sylvia who both got the correct answer.

This week's photograph needs little explanation unless you have been living under a stone in a dark cave. Friday's solar eclipse was the first total eclipse to be witnessed in the UK since 1999. I decided to forgo my usual Friday morning task of cleaning the bathroom and nip down to the local country park instead. On my way I met a friend of mine who is into astronomy. He travelled down to the Isles of Scilly in 1999 to experience the last total eclipse to be seen in the UK and is planning a trip to Gibraltar for a future eclipse. Between him and me with my camera with a large zoom lens attached to a monopod there was a lot of geekery going on. I always thought total solar eclipses were quite rare events but it's just that they all can't be seen fully in the UK. The next total solar eclipse to be seen in the UK won't be until 23rd September 2090. So this week's question is

In which year is the next total solar eclipse?

Joining in last week was Emma and her view of Bangor Harbour in Northern Ireland. Candace gave us a very appropriate shot for Mother's Day. From Merlinda there was a classic spring daffodil.

  4. That is a fab image. It was distinctly underwhelming where I was due to all the cloud

  5. That is such a great shot, I wish I had been able to see it, but London was too overcast. The next eclipse isn't due until 2090... I might try hanging around for it ;) x

  9. I don't recall the date, but I remember reading about it and being positive I wouldn't see another full one but probably another partial. I remember the full one in 1999 and this latest one didn't seem to compare at all. I was a bit disappointed. That being said, you managed to get one of the best photos Ive seen of it. Well done you :)
