I can't resist blackberries. You can't get anything much more seasonal than fruit that grows wild without any human intervention. For me it really marks the change in the seasons from summer to autumn. When I was a child we always used to go blackberry picking on Wimbledon Common with the added bonus of a spot of Womble hunting. Sadly I never found a Womble but I was convinced they lived down holes on the golf course.
This year we just hadn't
seemed to get round to going and with everything ripening early this
year I feared we were too late. I had no need to worry though as on
the first walk back to school I spotted them. Big and plump, their
dark exterior hiding their deep purple juices. On the walk home in
the afternoon I went armed with a selection of containers in which to
carry our bounty. I had one helper eager to pick them while the other
was content to point out the ones we had missed. I usually make a
simple oat crumble with any fruit suitable but I decided to make a
variation on this for our pudding that night. So here it is –
picked, made and eaten within a couple of hours.
