Sunday Snap – The Jolly Fisherman

We were going supersonic for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked the name of the aircraft and the answer is

Concorde

Going up, up and away with the right answer were Sarah, Mary, Sarah, Anne and Susan.

This week we are off to the seaside. In 1908 the Great Northern Railway Company commissioned a poster to promote one of its Lincolnshire coastal destinations. They paid twelve guineas to an artist by the name of John Hassell. He was a renowned advertising illustrator but this is the one he was best remembered for.

The poster he produced featured a character which became known as 'The Jolly Fisherman'. He was dressed in long sleeve blue jumper, white trousers, long boots, bright red scarf and a sou'wester hat and shown to be happily bounding down the beach. Added to the poster was the name of the town and the slogan, “...is so bracing”. It's not known who came up with the slogan but it is thought to have been one of the railway company employees. The combination of the Jolly Fisherman and the slogan proved to be highly successfully with the town becoming a well-known tourist attraction.

The reality was that John Hassell had never visited the town before he designed the poster. It wasn't until 1936 that he made the trip himself. The copyright for the poster was held by the railway company and then British Railways after nationalisation. They passed the copyright to the poster and the original poster to the town council in 1966. The poster now hangs in the town hall. Hassell died aged 80 in 1948 penniless. This week's question is

Which seaside town was promoted by the Jolly Fisherman?

We were joined last week by Susan and a stunning smile. Sara's favourite images this week include a floral arrangement and a purple prickly pear. An impressive leap was captured by Sarah. There was a trip to the farm for Claire to see the llamas. Mary has been looking down the well-trodden path. At the Ashmolean Sarah has been to the Jeff Koons exhibition. In Northern Ireland Kara found dramatic skies and rainbows. Soma has been showcasing her steampunk wings. Finally, Anne has been to the Think Tank Science Museum.

  1. I recognise the image, but have no idea what seaside town it is. I'll guess something northern like Skegness.

  7. This picture brings back some wonderful childhood memories of visiting Skegness with my parents. I used to get so excited to go, I remember in the early 90's there was a shop on the front that sold nothing but Trolls and I used to get one each time we went! #sundaysnap xxx
