Sunday Snap – Malham Cove

We were celebrating St. Wilfred for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked which city the St. Wilfred's Day parade was in and the answer is

Ripon

Riding through the streets on horseback with the correct answer were Lisa and Cheryl.

This week we have taken the short walk from the village of Malham to the breathtaking sight of Malham Cove. It is thought to have been formed over 50,000 years ago when a huge glacier melted on land above it. It caused a waterfall to pour over the top of it. As the years went by the combination of freezing water and rain has created a sheer limestone cliff. It is rare to see the waterfall coming over the top now except after heavy rainfall. However there is a stream that runs out of the cave and eventually joins up with the River Aire. On the day we visited the stream directly below it had dried up due to the extreme summer heat and you could walk over the river bed right up to the cliff face.

To the side of the cliff is path that forms part of the Pennine Way. This leads upwards across 400 steps to a large limestone pavement on top. This was used as a location shoot for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1) where Harry and Hermione discuss going to Godrick's Hollow and where the secret of the snitch is revealed. A walk further on comes out at Malham Tarn – a glacial lake that lies at 377m above sea level. This week's question is

Which national park is Malham Cove in?

We were joined last week by Susan and a future dream. Betty has been spotting the spring arrivals in New Zealand driving round the backroads of Taranaki. This week's cards from Lisa feature a very busy man! Anne has been watching the ferris wheel go round. The start of the new term means school photo time for Kara plus a trip to the Dorset County Show. In Hastings Cheryl got her photograph before the rain came. Sara's favourite things this week include street dancers in Burien, cherry tomatoes pink chrysanthemums and baby chicks. Finally, Jesh has been spotting Naples yellow all around.
