Sunday Snap – The Wizard of Dribble

Wizard of Dribble
We were looking at the history of the Suffragettes in Sheffield for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked what was the surname of Emmeline and her daughters Christabel, Sylvia and Adela and the answer is

Pankhurst

Campaigning with the right answer were Lisa, Kara, Anne, Cheryl and Susan.

We're off to Staffordshire this week to pay tribute to a legendary footballer. Born in the Hanley district of Stoke-on-Trent he only ever played for two league teams during his senior career – his hometown team of Stoke City and Blackpool. He signed as a professional for Stoke City on his 17th birthday in 1932. He played for them until 1947 when he fell out with the manager and board. At the age of 32 he moved to Blackpool. It was while playing for Blackpool that his most famous match took place. At the age of 38 he was selected to play in the FA Cup final. Bolton Wanderers were 3-1up after 55 minutes but he spurred them on to win 4-3. A feat that was helped by his fantastic dribbling skills. Since then the match was named after him despite Stan Mortsensen scoring a hat-trick for Blackpool.

At the age of 46 he decided to return to Stoke City with the club paying a transfer fee of £3,500 for him. He helped Stoke City get promoted back into the top league in his second season back with them. In the New Year's Honours List of 1965 he found himself being awarded a knighthood – the only professional who has been knighted whilst still an active player. He finally retired just five days after his 50th birthday in February 1965. This ended a 33 year career which included a 22 year spell in the England team. He died in his home city of Stoke-on-Trent aged 85 in 2000. This week's question is

Who was 'The Wizard of Dribble'?
We were joined last week by Susan and some pancake flipping. Kara has been in Portugal exploring castles and riding on trams. At Anne's the kids were making unboxing videos. In Norway Cheryl found a perfect reflection in the still waters. Finally, Lisa made a special Valentine's card for a snoring husband.
