Sunday Snap – The old street

We were getting festive at the Yule Ball for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked which fictional school for wizards and witches it was held at and the answer is

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Conjuring up the right answer were Susan, Cheryl, Sarah, Anne and Soma.

We're going on a Christmas shopping trip for this week's Sunday Snap. This is the oldest street in this Yorkshire city and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086. The modern day name for the street comes from a Medieval word meaning bench or booth. At one time the prefix Fless was added as this where flesh was sold from the booths lining this street. In 1872 there were 26 butchers recorded as being on the street but now there are none. The 15th century timber buildings in places are nearly touching. The original design of the overhanging roofs was to protect the wattle and daub walls below. It would have also helped to protect the meat hanging outside from any direct sunlight. Outside some of the shops the meat hooks can still be seen. The raised pavements above the cobbles is not a modern addition as the meat was slaughtered at the back of the shops. Twice weekly the waste from the butchers was washed down the channel in the middle of the street. Today the street is home to a mixture of tea rooms, gift shops and independent businesses. This week's question is

What is the name of the street?

We were joined last week by Sarah with her seasonal visit to Hogwarts in the snow. Also feeling the chill was Susan with a visit to see the new Frozen film. Cheryl has been exploring the battle-scarred beaches of Dunkirk which has a modern day message. Was the amphibian Axolotl a beauty or a beast for Anne? Sue also went watery with the stunning jellyfish. Finally, Soma has been making a pencil holder to go with her on her travels.

  4. I don't know but the thought of the butcher's waste being washed down the middle of the street..eek! I do feel bad about the demise of butcher shops, where I used to live there was a village square which had four butcher's when I moved in and now has only one. I still go back there for my Christmas turkey hamper. where we live now we have no nearby butcher but a mobile butcher's van that comes around once a month.
thanks for hosting and I'll be back next week to find out the answer x
