Sunday Snap – The Sister's Grave

We're were at the Yorkshire coast for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked where the castle was located and the answer is

Scarborough

Storming the battlements with the right answer were Susan, Lisa and Soma.

We're staying in Scarborough for this week's Sunday Snap and at the graveyard right next to the castle. In this spot overlooking the south bay is the very weathered gravestone of one of the three most famous sisters in literature. Although the sisters were known for living on the edge on the wild Pennine moors in Haworth, West Yorkshire in their father's parsonage this sister had connections to Scarborough.

When she was 20 years old she was employed as a governess by a family in York. During the five years she was there she accompanied them to Scarborough each year for their five week summer holiday. Whilst staying there she took inspiration for her future novels Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. When her second novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, was first published it sold out in six weeks. However over time she has never had the acclaim that has been given to her two elder sisters' work in particular their novels Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights.

Sadly, like her mother and the rest of her siblings, she died young. In December 1848 one of her elder sisters died and not long afterwards she became ill herself. She was diagnosed with that great Victorian killer disease of consumption and in an attempt to prolong her life she decided to travel back to Scarborough to take advantage of the fresh sea air. It was too late to help and within a week she was dead. Her funeral was organised quickly and was attended by just her surviving sister and a former school teacher of hers.

Over the years the gravestone has taken quite a battering from the salty sea air and is now so weathered that the whole of the name is now longer legible. In 2011 a plaque was installed in front of the grave detailing the original inscription so now her memory will live on. This week's question is

Which novelist is buried in this graveyard?

We were joined last week by Susan and some very slick summer holiday haircuts. Lisa has been in demand with her homemade cards. Kara has been by the water in Wells and visiting the zoo. The mild winter in New Zealand has meant spring flowers have bloomed early for Betty. Finally, Soma has been sharing her amazing drawings in her sketchbook.
