Sunday Snap – The home of a Queen

We were The Pump Room for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked which spa town it was situated in and the answer is

Royal Leamington Spa

Taking the waters with the right answer were Sheila, Anne and Cheryl.

For this week we're off to Leicestershire. In the middle of Bradgate Park lies the ruins of Bradgate House. In the late 15th century the 1st Marquess of Dorset, stepson of Edward IV, prepared the land for the building of a grand house. He died before it was started but the plans were continued by his son, the 2nd Marquess of Dorset, and in 1520 Bradgate House was completed. The house and title was passed down again to his son who lived in the house. Sometime between 1536 and 1537 his eldest daughter was born. Some reports say she was born at Bradgate House whilst other research suggests she was born in London. Wherever her exact birthplace was she certainly lived here as a child.

Through her mother she was the great-granddaughter of Henry VII. In 1553 her first cousin once removed Edward VI lay dying. Normal succession rules would have had his half-sisters, Mary and Elizabeth, as heirs to the throne but Edward named his cousin as successor. When Edward finally died on 6th July 1553 notice was sent to his cousin that she was now Queen of England and Ireland. With reluctance she accepted and was proclaimed queen on 10th July. Her reign though was short-lived as the Privy Council decided to change allegiance in favour of Mary and nine days later on 19th July her reign was over and she was imprisoned in the Tower of London. In November she was convicted of High Treason which carried the death sentence. Although her life was initially spared she was beheaded, along with her husband, in February 1554. This week's question is

Who was the 'Nine-day' Queen?

We were joined last week by early bird Susan and some beautiful sunrises. Snow was in the air and on the trees for Anne. Finally Cheryl had some real snow instead of the terrible fake snow that appeared a couple of weeks ago.

  2. This is Lady Jane Grey, such a sad story. We were not a very nice nation, and I'm not sure we are that nice now but at least we've stopped chopping off people's heads. Thanks for hosting x
