Sunday Snap – The beast in the lake

We were in the Isle of Wight for last week's Sunday Snap celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Isle of Wight Festival. I asked who the statue of one of its most famous performers was and the answer is

Jimi Hendrix

Rocking out with the right answer were Kara, Anne and Lisa.

We're back up to Scotland for this week. Rising out of the mist is Urquhart Castle. Over the centuries it has had a turbulent history and is one of the most visited castles in Scotland however it is not what this area is world famous for.

In 1933 reports started to come in of a large creature living in and around the lake that Urquhart Castle is next to. At 23 miles long and at points 230m deep there's a lot of water for various animals and aquatic life to live in. Once the sighting became public more reports by local people were made saying they had seen something over the years variously described as a 'monster fish', 'sea serpent' and 'dragon'.

In the next couple of years more reports, photographs and films appeared of what people said they believed to be this strange creature. While some of them were clearly hoaxes and others dismissed as being dogs, seals or otters others were left as unexplained. The interest grew so much that this once isolated area became a major tourist attraction. In order to try and find this creature once and for all several searches of the lake have taken place with sonar and echosounder equipment used. While nothing conclusive has ever been found its existence still can't be ruled out either. This week's question is

What is the creature commonly known as?

We were joined last week by Susan and a school show. Sara has found roses in the sunshine and bright skies on the summer solstice. There has been birthday celebrations at Kara's and a trip to Old Harry Rocks. The new addition to Anne's family is getting along well. Lisa paid a visit to the 9/11 Living Memorial. Finally, Jesh has been savouring the summer days.
