Sunday Snap – The Market

We were at the home of the Socialist Baronet for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked which Labour prime minister's cabinet Sir Charles Trevelyan was served in and the answer is

James Ramsay MacDonald

Winning the vote with the right answer were Soma and Anne.

My apologies this week to any vegetarians or vegans reading! Whilst this market is famous for all manner of foods and goods – indeed the signs around it actually states how famous it is – there is one meat based product that is particularly associated with.

The market is located in Lancashire just north of Manchester and it is the biggest market in the North West of England. It was originally established in 1444 during the reign of Henry VI. In the 1970s it moved to its present site. After a branch of NatWest was demolished in the 1990s a new fish and meat hall was constructed.

The product that the market is especially famous for is black pudding. Many of the stalls claim to produce the original version of it although it seems it dates back to the 15th century. Black pudding is a type of blood sausage which is mixed with oats, barley and herbs to form its distinctive look. This week's question is

Where is the market?

We were joined last week by Susan and a little harvest festival chick. Lisa has been hiking in Ein Avdat National Park. After her trip to the Sierra Mountains Soma has been doing some painting. There was a flashback for Anne with three small children. Kara found the TARDIS and two trainee paramedics. In New Zealnad Betty captured the perfect evening sky. Finally, there were birthday doughnuts with Jesh.

  1. Is it Cumberland? I have no idea, so that’s a complete guess. Hope you’re well x

  2. I really don't know this one, but we have pretty impressive markets here in Birmingham that have been in the same place for over 800 years. Our rag market is reported to be the best in Europe, I love to just walk around with my daughter when she's looking for fabric.
    Thanks for hosting x
