Finance Fridays – Get fit for less

We were looking at some of the different Railcards for last week's Finance Fridays. This week we are getting up and moving. Today is the start of the four day Easter bank holiday. It is fast becoming an excuse to indulge in lots of food and drink. With the days now longer and hopefully warmer it's time to get up and out to start shedding those excess pounds. We all know how expensive gym memberships can be – especially if you don't use it! - so here are ways to get fit and keep track of your fitness for free or at a low cost.

Outdoor gyms
– Local councils have seen the benefits of giving access to free outdoor gyms to their residents. Turn up and use the equipment that is available. The Great Outdoor Gym Company installs outdoors gyms in parks across the UK. You can find one close to you here.

Green Gym – If traditional gym exercises aren't for you then try a Green Gym. Essentially they are organised gardening and conservations sessions where the participants help to develop and maintain the environment. By digging, planting and path clearing you will be burning off the calories without even realising it. The initiative is run by The Conservation Volunteers and the list of current Green Gyms is here.

Walking – The NHS recommends incorporating a brisk 10 minute walk into your daily routine. As time goes on you can start to walk faster and for longer. When you start off a simple pair of comfy shoes will do. Once you continue you may want to start monitoring your progress with fitness tracker such as FitBit.

parkrun – In 2004 a small group of runners got together on a weekly basis to run in Bushy Park. 14 years later it has grown in a worldwide phenomenon with over 500 events in the UK alone. At 9am each Saturday morning groups of runners and walkers complete a measured 5km course. It's free to register and take part and all you have to do is turn up with your printed barcode. Once you have finished you are emailed or texted your time. Find your nearest event here.

This is a collaborative post.
