Sunday Snap – All roads lead to...

We were looking at the statute of the Mad King for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked which monarch it was and the answer is

King George III

Getting regal with the right answer were Sarah, Anne and Sarah.

We went just round the corner for last week's Sunday Snap and this week we aren't venturing much further. This statue is just by Nelson's Column at Trafalgar Square but it is technically at Charing Cross. The importance of this is that all distances to London are measured from this exact point. Its location fans out to six different roads. One of these is Whitehall where the king in this statue was beheaded in front of Banqueting House.

When he was born in 1600 in Dunfermline his father, James VI, was king of Scotland – his late grandmother was Mary, Queen of Scots. When Elizabeth I died in 1603 his father became then the new king of England as well. He wasn't destined to be king himself but his elder brother Henry died at the age of 18 in 1612 and with it became heir apparent.

He came to the throne in 1625 with the death of his father. His reign will be remembered for the English Civil War that took place during it. It culminated in his imprisonment and subsequent trial for treason. Three days after he was found guilty and sentenced to death. On the morning of 30 January 1649 he was taken from St. James' Palace to Whitehall where the execution scaffold was set up. With the king now dead a republic was declared and the Commonwealth of England was established and lead by Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell. This week's question is

Which king is the statue of?

We were joined last week by Susan and Princess Jasmine. The rain and a run inspired Soma to get painting. Sarah has been supporting her long jumping son. There was a mum and me moment for Mary. Birthdays mean cake of course and Anne made a drone one for her brother while Bex made an archery themed one for her son. Kara had plenty of cuddles for her baby niece and went to see Matilda. For Sarah it was time to look beyond the cloisters. Finally, Jesh has been thinking about the light by day and night.
