Finance Fridays – Wedding costs online

We were looking at the future of diesel cars in last week's Finance Fridays. This week we are looking at the costs and savings of planning a wedding using the internet. When I got married in 1998 the internet was still in its infancy and most people didn't even have an email address! Weddings are big business and the cost of arranging one seems to go up and up each year. Is it worth sourcing items and services online for your wedding or is it better to go down the old fashioned route and go round shops and venues?

Rings – If you get the engagement ring wrong there may not be a wedding at all! You may choose to buy an engagement ring in advance for a surprise proposal or go out as a couple to buy rings. If you go into a shop there is the added pressure of the sales assistant who could be steering you towards rings out of your budget. If you choose to buy one online you'll have far more choice of style and setting whether you are looking for a simple solitaire or tension set engagement rings.

Dress – There's a certain thrill to trying on wedding dresses and finding the 'one'. By trying on dresses you'll be able to find a style that suits you. At this time of year you can find sample bargains in bridal shops as the new styles tend to arrive from September onwards. If you're looking for something specific such as a beach wedding dress then you will find more choice and value online.

Flowers – You've long been able to order flowers to be delivered to a home address or venue but not everyone thinks about wedding flowers. Before you look at the costs involved of going online or ordering locally think about the freshness of the flowers and the logistics of the flowers getting to you on time. If the flowers don't turn up on time at least with a local supplier you have the choice of visiting them and finding out what has happened.

Invitations – If you want wedding invitations that are printed especially for your big day then your best bet is looking online. One option is to have them printed and then sent to you but you can save money by printing them yourself at home. You can design them yourself using sites such as Canva or use a company like Hip Hip Hooray.

Venue – Wedding receptions can be on a very small scale or as grand as a castle. Naturally you'll be wanting to visit the venue yourself before you book it but you can save a lot of time and effort by checking out all the details through their website and review sites.

What wedding services have you used online? Did you find it cheaper?

This is a collaborative post.
