Nothing But. review

Nothing But. snacks

For my annual Lent abstinence this year I have decided to give up crisps. Not just potato crisps but all those lip-licking maize snacks; in fact a whole supermarket aisle of delicious crinkly bags of delight. However, a girl cannot survive on a toasted sandwich and a selection of fruit alone for lunch so substitutes needed to be found. Some inspiration came in the form of Nothing But. snacks that I was sent to try.

I've tried vegetable crisps before and very nice they were too, but Nothing But. are actually nothing like those. There are not crisps at all and don't fall into the category of 'salted snacks'. The fact is, as their name alludes to, they are nothing but vegetables. What makes them different is they freeze dry vegetables and simply put them into a bag. No added fat, salt, sugar, colour or preservatives.

I got sent the Mange Tout and Red Pepper and the Sliced Beetroot and Parsnip flavours to try. If you're looking for a healthy snack to fool your vegetable-hating kids into eating then these aren't the snack for you. Since they are vegetables pure and simple that's what they taste of but with even more depth of flavour.

With both packs they have a dominant flavour. In the Mange Tout and Red Pepper variety it is the red pepper taste that comes through. I was glad I tried one of the parsnip slices first as once I had eaten one of the beetroot slices it was all I could taste in my mouth. I'm not a big fan of beetroot as I find it too earthy but thankfully these did taste more of beetroot than soil.

If you're somebody who watches the calories you'll be pleased to know that the Mange Tout and Red Pepper snack has just 26 calories per bag. The Sliced Beetroot and Parsnip variety has 36 calories. Since they are just freeze dried vegetables they are both suitable for vegetarians and vegans plus they count towards 1 of your 5-a-day.

If you find you take to work tubs of fresh sliced vegetables which look nice first thing in the morning but don't look so appetising by lunchtime these could be the solution for you. The foil lined packet ensures no more slimy clingfilm horrors lurking at the bottom of your bag. However, do remember if you don't like these vegetables in the first place these snacks aren't going to change your mind about them.

I was sent the two flavours of Nothing But. to review. No payment was made for this post. All words, opinions and photographs are my own.
