We were travelling across bridges for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked what the name of the famous rail bridge was and is the answer is
The Forth Bridge
We're staying in Scotland and last week's photograph links in with this week's. When we travelled across the The Forth Bridge we got on at Edinburgh Waverley station. Waverley station is the only train station in the world named after a novel and this collection of books was written by the above author (I read this on a sign at the station!) This statue is part of a huge monument, which dominates Princes Street, dedicated to this writer and it lies just metres away from the station. The Waverley series of stories takes in some of his most famous works such as Rob Roy, Ivanhoe and Peveril of the Peak.
So popular were his novels that he is credited as the founder of the historial fiction genre. His style of writing with descriptions of sweeping landscapes and gallant deeds made him known as a part of the romantic literary movement. By the start of the 1820s he was probably the most famous Scotsman in the world. His other claim to fame was that the then Prince Regent and future George IV asked him for his help in recovering the Scottish Crown Jewels or Honours of Scotland as they were known. The collection was hidden away during Cromwell's time as leader of the Commonwealth. The jewels were found in Edinburgh Castle where they remain today on show to the public. As a reward a baronetcy was created for him so from then on he could use the title 'Sir'. This week's question is
Who is statue dedicated to?
We were joined last week by Anne and her youngest son. Kara has been getting dressed for birthday adventures and celebrating with a Pokemon cake. There was a visit to the farm by The Madhouse Family. There was a photo of Susan's girl lollipop and Gentle Joy has been bird spotting and sharing some photography tips.
