Sunday Snap – Whitby Abbey

We were at Piccadilly Circus for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked who the famous statue of the Greek god Anteros was commonly mistaken for and the answer is

Eros

With Halloween just a couple of days away we are taking a trip to Whitby this week. For many years now Whitby has become the destination of choice for Goths due to its Victorian vampirical connections. In 1897 Bram Stoker had his tale of the English solicitor Jonathan Harker published. Harker is sent to deal with an estate in the Carpathian Mountains close to Transylvania. While staying in the castle there he is scared witless by the strange goings on by both his nocturnal host and the blood thirsty 'sisters' who come after Harker.

Before Harker arrives back in England a ship runs aground in Whitby just under the cliffs where Whitby Abbey stands. One by one during the course of the journey the crew disappeared leaving just the captain and a black dog who jumps off the ship and disappears into the streets of Whitby. By coincidence Harker's fiancée Mina Murray is staying with her friend Lucy Westenra in Whitby. Mina and Lucy's suitors are mystified when Lucy becomes ill. It is only when Abraham Van Helsing is consulted that the true nature of Lucy's illness becomes apparent. Lucy dies after two puncture marks are found on her neck. Once Harker returns to England he, Mina and Lucy's friends join forces to capture and stop the vampire from killing and creating any more vampires. This week's question is

What was the name of Bram Stoker's vampire?

We were joined last week by Susan and a busy half term with the family. Lisa has been making an anniversary card with an amazing likeness to the original wedding photograph. It's been a week for remembering this week for Anne. There's been a meeting with Mister Maker for Kara and spotting a surfer making the most of the storm waves. Finally, in California Soma has had a close call with the autumn wildfires.

  2. Count Dracula! I've never been to Whitby but I've always wanted to go. I have a Goth friend who goes every Halloween and she says that everyone gets into the 'spirit' of things, and they all have a 'shockingly' good time. :)
