Sunday Snap - The Wobbly Bridge

We were looking at the reconstruction of one of Shakespeare's famous London theatres for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked what the name of it was and the answer is

Shakespeare's Globe

Getting all dramatic with the right answer were Cheryl, Nadine, Anne and Kara.

For this week we are just a few steps away from the Globe. There's also a first for Sunday Snap in the form of a GIF – see Thames flowing, the people walking across the bridge and the bird flying! This bridge design was the winner of a competition held by the Financial Times in conjunction with the London Borough of Southwark and the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1996. The brief was to design a new footbridge crossing the River Thames between Southwark and Blackfriars bridges. Once constructed it would be the first pedestrian footbridge built over the River Thames in central London for more than a century. At one end it lines up directly with St. Paul's Cathedral and at the other end it connects to the Tate Modern.

It was opened to the public on 10th June 2000 with around 80,000 people a day walking across the bridge. At any one time up to 2,000 people could be walking across the bridge but it was designed to take up to 5,000 in one go. However...within two days of it opening it was closed down after people were complaining how it much it swayed to the extent some were complaining of seasickness. The embarrassed engineers blamed it on 'synchronous lateral excitation' which is essentially people walking in the wrong way! It was given the nickname the 'wobbly bridge'. This swaying caused the bridge to be shut until February 2002 with the improvement work costing £5 million. This week's question is

What is the name of this bridge?

We were joined last week by Jack and Noah and their pumpkin heads. Susan has some words of wisdom about homemade costumes. In the pink was Cheryl and her reflective flamingo. With a lunch in mind Shaheen was thinking about the colours of autumn. Kelly was getting up close with an iris. A clear sunny day in Sweden means a heavy frost for Ulrika. At Brick Live Anne found her captain of the Lego ship. Kara's trio were busy searching in rock pools and getting cheeky with a well earned rest.

  1. I can see why people would worry about it wobbling although it looks pretty sturdy. I will have to look out for it, next time we are in London

  5. Millenium Bridge - a few wobbles don't bother me. I think even my son and hubby, who are afraid of heights, would be ok on this one.

  7. It has to be the millenium bridge, everything that opened in 2000 was called millenium surely :) I've not seen it (although i did go to London to visit the Millenium dome that year) and I don't think I'd like to cross it, although being across water is probably less scary than being across a deep ravine or even a motorway. But I'm not saying I would like a dip in the Thames..eek! I love the gif!
